Dan's Interviews

I probably don't have all of Dan's interviews, but these are the ones I know of.

Dan Laustsen did a 7 minute clip on Danish TV2, being interviewed by Ole Stephensen

"Fra Hollywood til Matas"(From Hollywood to Matas),
by Per Dabelsteen, Politiken. (Matas is a Danish chain of stores.)
Excerpt:
"I think it's fun working on the big productions, but I'd just as well helm smaller Danish productions - not Dogme projects though. I'm an aesthete all the way through, and I don't like accidentals. There has to be a vision, you have to know what you want with each single scene and I want beautiful pictures.
I know that some thought that the pictures in "Drengene fra Skt. Petri" were too pretty compared to the subject of sabotage, but Steven Spielberg's movie about the murder of millions of Jews, "Schindler's List", is one of the most beautiful black & white movies I have seen, and nobody critisized those pictures. November 2001
Dan Laustsen was interviewed in the small free monthly "Film Guide"(nr. 75 November 2001) on the occasion of the Danish premiere of Pagten aka Le Pacte des Loups aka Brotherhood of the Wolf
(complete text):

"Pagten" is one of those movies which, as a photographer, you dream of being allowed to make - a big spectacular movie set in a time when light was something you got by lighting a fire, a torch or a candle. It was a task I had never been set before, and the message from the director and the producers was not "it must be made as cheaply as possible", on the contrary, "we want to make a movie that looks completely fantastic".

"This was a starting point, and it turned out not to be just talk, but an attitude that put its mark on the on the complete production from start to the last shot. It also turned out that the director and I shared the vision of how the film ought to be made: A very mobile camera, a big contrast between light and dark, and a universe where we would not shy away from the dark pictures."

"The director and I established a co-operation which in itself was a big satisfaction, and it compensated for the challenge of being the only (english speaking) Dane on a French-speaking crew. "Pagten" became an action movie that to a large degree is carried by the visual expression, and it plays off spectacular scenes. The result was a European blockbuster which gave me the opportunity to let myself go, using a visual language and a filmic expression like never before."
